Easy and Quick Paper Bag Stars

I'll confess that I haven't actually tried this, but these paper bag stars look so easy that, if I needed some fast party decor, especially for Christmas or winter, I could see throwing these together. The one drawback, of course, is that you need to have small white or colored paper bags on hand. I pretty much never have those, so a trip to my local party store would be in order. I'm sure the hot glue gun shown in both of these videos is unnecessary. Any kind of glue will do.

This one is the most basic. Plain white bags, plain stars, and the only other tools you need are some glue and a pair of scissors. You could dress these up by decorating them before assembly with markers, stickers, foil or any other way you can imagine to change plain white to something more exciting.

These are dressed up a little with colored bags, an extra snip (a bit like cutting a snowflakes) and a slightly different way of connecting the star once you have all the bags glued together. The only tool you need here that wasn't part of the last one is a brad for fastening the ends of the stars.

I'm including one more, not to show you the technique (it's the same), but to show how you can change the look by using fancier bags. In fact, you don't really have to even watch this one. Just look at the opening screen to see the result.

I've got some family gatherings coming up, and I really think this will dress up the party.

Have you ever tried this? If not, have fun!

  1. These are lovely. I especially like the white.

  2. I'm rather fond of the white, too. They look like they would be great for a Christmas party.

  3. I liked how the woman suggested using brads for the final "pull together" so that she could remove them to store for reuse another time (which would be more difficult if it were glued together instead).

The other video where you glue all the petals together seems like too fiddly a job for me to try. I'm into less work, like the other videos!

Thanks for sharing, Myrna. I would never have thought of this but hope to try the first one as a bow for a big present. The "problem", as I see it, is the cost of 7 paper bags, especially at Michael's. I'm going to check our local dollar stores today (as it's cheaper and much easier to just buy a bow - but not as original, LOL).

  4. Yes, the 7 paper bags might be a problem. I can buy 50 for $1.96 at Walmart here, but I couldn't find them on the Walmart Canada site.

  5. I found 35 for $1.25 at Dollarama. Now I just need to make (7 of) them, LOL!

  6. $1.25? Elaine, you win the paper bag bargain contest! LOL Seriously though, let us know how the project turns out.
