My Vacuum Cleaner Family

I'm not a particularly great housekeeper (or even a good one), but last week I broke down and bought a new vacuum cleaner, because the one I've been using for the past eight years seems to feel heavier each time I have to drag it upstairs. I don't have a lot of storage space for an extra vacuum upstairs, so I bought a baby vacuum. It weighs around eight pounds compared to the other one that weighs in at over twenty. Nothing fancy or exciting, it's not self-propelled (that would add weight), and it only has a couple of attachments, but it wasn't expensive and it does the job. Mostly, though, I think I like it because it looks like an adolescent next to my very powerful but heavy Eureka. Almost...cute in comparison.

  1. I don't own a vacuum cleaner. I have no carpets - thank goodness. I have tiles & vinyls.

  2. Mary, I envy you. We have lots of carpeting. Hardwood floors are popular around here, but winter in Chicago is cold, and carpeting serves as a bit of insulation. It is a total dust catcher, though.

  3. We have hardwoods under our wall-to-wall carpeting on the main floor. The carpeting has needed replacement for over 20 years now, but something always tops it on the to-do list. A neighbour (with an identical house) said we should just pull up our carpeting because the 55-year-old hardwoods are in great condition. (Actually, this is probably true, as we lifted my daughter's old bedroom carpeting and found almost-new hardwoods below.) I refuse to rip our carpeting out, though. Like Chicago, it is cold here in southern Ontario, but the main reason is that I can walk in my house in bare/socked feet with a carpet, but I can't walk on hardwoods without shoes (re my plantar fasciitis). Any excuse not to wear tight shoes 24/7 is a good enough reason for me to keep the wall-to-wall carpeting, no matter how disgusting it might appear in places....

  4. Elaine, another excellent reason to stick with carpeting. (I love the beauty of hardwood floors, but alas, it's not going to happen for me).

  5. robot vacuum cleaners will do a thorough job of cleaning the floors, as they are equipped with sensors and will continue to vacuum the area, even spot-cleaning, until the job is completed.
